Benjamin F. Rollins, one of the earliest residents of Gresham, died in Portland Sunday, February 15, of heart trouble at the home of Mrs. Ada Knight, also a former Gresham resident. He had been ill for some time and under treatment at the Sellwood hospital, and about a month ago was taken to the home of Mrs. Knight.
Mr. Rollins was born October 13, 1857, in Springfield, Ill. He arrived in Gresham with his stepfather and mother, Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Metzger, October 9, 1878. He was a school teacher in the vicinity for several years, was a property owner and business man here. He had the first store and postoffice on Gresham and was the one who suggested the name when the office was established according to information from his relatives. He served as Justice of the peace for three or four terms. He left Gresham about 15 years ago and went to Portland and later to Sellwood where he conducted a store and made his home until ill health made it necessary for him to go to the hospital.
Among the surviving relatives are the following half brothers and sisters: Harve and Jake Metzger, Gresham; George Metzger, Portland: Mrs. Rose Markley, Tulare, Calif.; and Mrs. Minnie George, Newberg, Ore.
