BARNWELL — Services for James Eli (Jim) Benson, 70, will be held at 3:00pm Thursday at Barnwell United Methodist Church with burial in the Methodist Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00pm at Mole Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Barnwell United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 126, Barnwell, SC 29812.
Mr. Benson died Monday, April 16, 2007. Born in Imboden, Arkansas he was the son of the late James T. and Virginia Davidson Benson. A graduate of Wofford College with degrees from Western Carolina University and The University of South Carolina, Mr. Benson was a lifelong educator serving as a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent for over forty years. He received numerous community and state awards including the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship endowed by Rotary International but his greatest legacy is the guidance, counsel and wisdom he passed on to the thousands of lives he touched.
A loving husband, father, brother and grandfather, Mr. Benson is survived by his wife of forty-six years Betty Jo Bouknight Benson; daughter Melissa Benson Hartley (Charlie) of Barnwell; sons James T. Benson (Shannon) of Blythewood and Christopher B. Benson (Ronda) of Saluda; brother Donald R. Benson (Linda) of Summerville; grandchildren India and Olivia Hartley, Eli and Katie Benson, and Maddie Benson.
