In 1940 he and his parents and three sisters lived in a house they owned at 334 McCrea Avenue in Dennison, OH. Their home was valued at $1800. His father worked as a fireman for a steam railroad, with an income in 1939 of $2000 for 52 weeks of work.

Bill was the son of Wilbert and Margaret (Wright) Chew. On July 21, 1957, he married Nancy Wright. She survives.

He was owner/operator of Alderman Hardware in Killbuck and was one of the founders of Kill'um Buck Longrifles.

He was a life member of the National Rifle Association and a member of Killbuck CIC and Millersburg Spartan Lodge F&AM 126.

Surviving in addition to his wife are children, Doug (Mary) Chew of Millersburg, Dana (Steve) Phillips of Holmesville and Howard (Heather) Chew of Millersburg; grandchildren, Dallas, Jesse, Jewels, Ethan, Catherine and Jade; a brother, Dan Chew of Bowerston; and sisters, Mary Warner of Bowerston, Donna Lightell of Georgia, and Anna Lane of Dennison.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
