Obituary

Wilmont Harrison Spears, well-known farm resident of the Bucyrus community, died suddenly at his home Wednesday, February 16, 1955, at the age of 72. M. Spears was stricken about four that afternoon as he was doing farm chores. He had been failing in health the past three years.

Born Sept. 29, 1882, near Stilwell, Kansas, son of the late Henry and Jennie Lightfoot Spears, the deceased spent all his life in Miami county with the exception of a few years on a homestead in Minnesota. He attended Pony Corner school and grew to manhood helping on his parents' farm. By occupation and trade he was a farmer and a carpenter, diligent in both and very successful. He was a quiet, unassuming person and an ardent sports fan, enjoying especially baseball.

On Jan 27, 1923, he and Viola Ross were united in marriage in Paola and they resided in the Bucyrus and Wea township communities during their 32 years of life together, spending the past 18 years at their present home. One son, Wilmont Harrison, Jr., was born to them, and he now lives near the home place.

Surviving besides the wife and son, are a grandson, Harrison Lee Spears, 20 months; two half sisters, Mrs. Mary Pumphrey, Dodge City, Kansas, and two half brothers, Roy and Don Spears, both of Kansas City. His mother died when he was four years old. He was preceded in death by his father, twin sisters and two brothers.

The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at the Louisburg Baptist church, the pastor, Rev. Jerry Tyler, officiating. Burial was at Louisburg, under the direction of the Runyan Funeral home.
