A son of Claude R. Bassham and Hazel Bassham Roderick, Claude was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas, on October 2, 1920. He attended public schools in Fort Smith, Van Buren, Little Rock, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and New Orleans, Louisiana, but graduated from Hot Springs High School, Hot Springs, Arkansas, in 1938. He was a member of his high school track team, winning two events and placing in a number of others. He attended Santa Ana Junior College, Santa Ana, California. Claude enlisted in the US Navy Ferry Command (Navy Reserve)on May 2, 1942, as an ensign and received his basic training at Corpus Christi, Texas, qualifying as a ground flight instructor and transport pilot, earning his coveted gold Navy pilots wings. Claude served one year in the Unites States. He was killed in a plane crash near Columbus, Ohio, on May 4, 1943.
