Urban A. Deters, 80, Oneida, KS, died early Wednesday morning, July 23, 2008 at the Life Care Center in Seneca.
Urban was born in the rural Baileyville area, on February 6, 1928, the son of Bernard A. and Anna Wiltz Deters, as one of 14 children. He attended school in Baileyville, and worked on the family farm. He was recruited into the Army in October 1951.
He married Charlotte Elizabeth Sperfslage on August 26, 1953 at St. Bede's Catholic Church in Kelly. With his wife, he farmed, raised cattle and hogs and operated a dairy south of Oneida.
Urban was a member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Fidelity, KS and the Assumption Chapel in St. Marys, KS. He was a family man and had a deep love for his children. He loved to be outdoors and took great pleasure and pride in the livestock he raised and the crops he grew. He enjoyed fishing, and listening to the radio.
He is survived by a daughter, Rose Mueting of Seneca; eight sons, Richard and Jean, both of Sabetha, Leon, James, and Rene, all of Oneida, Nicholas of Baileyville, Kevin of Seneca, and Ervin of Fairview; three sisters, Lucille Boeckman of Goff, Alicia Burdick of Sabetha, Aurea Schmitz of Seneca; seven brothers, Dwaine and Raymond, both of Seneca, Lester of Marysville, Alvin, LeRoy, Bernie, all of Baileyville, and Gene of Branson; and 24 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte on March 3, 1998; a daughter Lisa Ann on September 11, 2005; his brother Merlin Deters on September 23, 2006; an infant brother; and a sister, Shirley Banks on July 14, 2008.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Saturday, July 26, at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Fidelity. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
