Grace Clara (Cooper) Johnson, 89, of Avoca died Saturday, June 16, 2007 at Schmitt Woodland Hills in Richland Center. She was born April 23, 1918 in Bear Valley the daughter of Oliver Freeman and Ollie (Gutknecht) Cooper.

On August 14, 1954 Grace married Carl Edward Johnson at her parent's home in Avoca, and he preceded her in death in 1999 after 45 years of marriage.

Grace graduated from Avoca High School in 1935 and earned a teaching certificate from Richland County Normal School in 1936. While teaching she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Wisconsin State College at Platteville in 1953.

At the age of 17 she started her teaching career at Leaches Crossing School (one room school) in Avoca. From there she taught at Wyoming Valley School, Spring Green, WI; Lake Geneva, WI; Woodstock, IL, and then retired from years of teaching 5th grade at Riverdale Schools in 1983. During a break in teaching in the late 1950's, Grace served on the Avoca School Board. She loved her husband, family, church family, and her teaching.

Grace is survived by her son, Dr. Clarence (Sharon) Johnson of Avoca/Monona,, two grandsons, Atty. Curtis (Kelly) Johnson of Mt. Horeb, Trooper Jeremiah (Jackie) Johnson of Reedsburg, great-grandson, Jason Clarence of Reedsburg, her sister, Anna Cooper of Richland Center, as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carl, her sisters Frances, Mary Katherine, and Florence Cooper, and her brother Ora Cooper.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 23, 2007 at 11:00 AM the Avoca United Methodist Church with Pastor's Harriett Rowland and Craig Peach officiating. Burial was held at the Avoca Cemetery.

Friends called at the Avoca United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 23, 2007, from 9:30 AM until the time of the Funeral service at 11:00 AM.
