Julia Ann was the eldest child of Nye Severns & Magdelene Quick. At age 17, she married on 24 June 1841 in Rock Island County, Illinois, to William W. Shutes, who died in December 1862. They had 8 children; Julia died in childbirth with their last child. Their children:
John Aaron Shutes
William Henry "Henry" Shutes
Olive Malinda Shutes Huber
Zachary Taylor "Taylor" Shutes
Edward O. Shutes
Emma Shutes Ellsworth Whitney Murdock Wakeland
Eliza Jane "Jennie" Shutes Littlejohn
And an unnamed baby who died and was buried with its mother near the family home beside the Yellow River at Pittsville, Wood County, Wisconsin. A century later, Nora Severns recalled that as a child, she would accompany her mother to a boulder by the Yellow River where an aunt and her infant were buried near the Shutes' cabin---which was long gone.
