Joan J. Orton - McCollum, age 96, of Richland Center, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at Schmitt Woodland Hills. She was born November 7, 1911 the daughter of Flor G. and Josephine (Worden) Woodman in Cazenovia.

Joan graduated from Cazenovia High School and the South Chicago Community Hospital Nursing School. Joan was married to Philo Orton in 1944 and he preceded her in death in 1950. She then was married to E.C. McCollum in 1970 and he preceded her in death in 1983.

Joan was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Richland Center. Joan had a love for life and a zest for living. Joan's career was as an Industrial nurse for Curtis Candy Co. She had many interests in her life. She loved collecting antiques, especially rural school houses, which are placed on the land she donated to the scouts for use as they see fit.

Her passion for clocks lead to a unique collection. Favorite pastimes were playing cards and bingo with friends at Schmitt Woodland Hills. She started Woodman Center Button Club and passed her joy of button collecting on to friends. She has been a contributor to the Richland Center Fire Department, Brewer Library, and restoration of the Old City Auditorium in Richland Center, which is the first auditorium of its type in the state. She has supported many other events and organizations throughout her lifetime.

Joan has been a major benefactor to the Boy Scouts of America by donating her farm and supporting them with contributions throughout the years and to the Richland Hospital, recently for the new Birthing Center, in which the center will be named in her honor. She will be missed by many friends, relatives and the community.

Joan is survived by cousins and many friends. In addition to her husbands and parents, Joan was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Claire Langdon and Susie Meinhardt, 2 brothers, William an Floyd Woodman and a nephew, Bill Woodman.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Richland Center. Fr. Emmanuel Famiyeh officiated. Burial was held at the Rockbridge Cemetery this spring.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at St. Mary's Catholic Church from 9:45 A.M. until the time of the Mass at 11:00 A.M. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church.
