Services for Vernon N. Barron, 89, of Troup were held Sept. 10 at the Henry's Chapel United Methodist Church, near Troup, with the Revs. David Goodwin and Gene Steger officiating. Burial was in the Henry's Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup.


Mr. Barron died Sept. 7 in a Tyler hospital. He was born Oct. 2, 1918 in Henry's Chapel to the late Robert Ester Barron and Carrie Florence Barron.

He was graduated from Carlisle High School in 1936. Mr. Barron graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University where he was a basketball star. He also served in the U.S. Army.

He owned and operated the Barron & Son Grocery in Carlisle from 1945 until 1979. He was also a rancher.

Mr. Barron was a lifetime active member of the Carlisle United Methodist Church and the Henry's Chapel United Methodist Church.

He married Mary Clyde Westmoreland Sept. 13, 1940. She preceded him in death in 2004, after 64 years of marriage.In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Smith.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Wes and Pam Barron, Troup; a sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Forrest Fuller, Little Rock, Ark.; a grandson, Andy Barron, Dallas; a granddaughter, Amanda Barron, Richardson; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Jones, Tyler; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Pallbearers were Anthony Martin, Mike Davis, Bill Davis, M.J. Florence, James R. Branham and Andy Tarver.

Honorar y pallbearers were Phillip Washington, Shorty Bayless, Steve Davis and Oscar Burton.
