Leland Edward Jones, 94 years of age, and a resident of Elyria, passed away Friday, October 17, 2003 at Welcome Nursing Home in Oberlin following a prolonged illness.

He was born May 6, 1909 in South Amherst and attended South Amherst Schools. He had been a resident of Amherst Township for 58 years before moving to Oberlin in January, 2002 for health care.

He was employed by General Industries in Elyria for 43 years retiring in 1971 as an inspection foreman in the quality control department. He also owned and managed a small dairy farm for forty years and was a life member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oberlin. Leland served as Master of the Oberlin Grange #1339 for 12 years. He was also a member of the Wellington Grange, the 3G Lorain County Farm Bureau Council, a member of the Oberlin AARP#395 and a member of the Beaver Creek Sportsman Club. He volunteered at the Grange Cafeteria at the Lorain County Fair for many years. He enjoyed hunting, farming, gardening, reading, travel, and family activities.

Survivors include his sons Thomas J. Jones of San Jose, California and Kenneth L. Jones of Pittsfield Township, daughter Shirley Law of Amherst, ten grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Katharine Agnes Jones (nee Gerhardinger) on March 10, 2002 by his parents Raymond and Lottie Jones (nee Garland) and by his brothers: Alfred Jones in 2000, Hubert Jones in 1993, Ken Jones in 1992, Earl Jones in 1988, Clifton Jones, Nelson Jones, John Jones in 1944, and Maynard Jones in 1945.

Friends may call Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst, Ohio. Closing prayers will be held on Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at Sacred Hearth Catholic Church, 410 West Lorain Street, Oberlin at 10:00 a.m. The Rev. Fr. William Padavick, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the EMH Regional Medical Center, 508 East Broad Street, Elyria, 44035 or Welcome Nursing Home, 417 South Main Street, Oberlin, Ohio 44074.
