Ursula Hedwig Pearson, 83, former White House Financial Director for 9 years, died August 23, 2008 at Arlington Hospital. She had cancer.

Mrs. Pearson started her government career in 1961 for the Department of the Air Force overseas. She worked for the Department of the Interior as an operating accountant and for the Department of the Navy, Naval Material Command Support Activity. In 1979, she was appointed Director of the White House Financial Management Division by President Jimmy Carter and continued under President Ronald Reagan. The Division was responsible for centralized budgeting and accounting services for all 12 agencies within the Executive Offices of the President, including the White House. She held that position until her retirement in 1987.

Described as charming, warm and down-to-earth, as well as a good organizer, Mrs. Pearson earned the praise of both President Jimmy Carter and President Ronald Reagan. A woman of high integrity she was committed to excellence and service to her adopted country.

Born August 31, 1924 in Breslau, Germany
Mrs. Pearson attended the Free University (Freie Universitaet) in 1947 in post war Berlin. There she worked in a translation office when she met her first husband, Foreign Service Officer John "Jack" Murphy. The office not only translated business documents but also American-made movies. She later took courses from Cornell University and the University of Oklahoma, never gaining a degree.

Married in 1951, she and her husband owned and operated the Town Hall Diner in Islip, Long Island from 1954 until his death in 1959.

In 1965, she married Air Force Master Sergeant Francis John Pearson in Wiesbaden, Germany. The couple has resided in the Washington area since 1968.

After her retirement from government service, Mrs. Pearson became a dedicated volunteer for her condominium association. She served on their Board of Directors for 17 years, including service as President and Treasurer. Admired for her many years of dedicated service to her community, Mrs. Pearson was named Board Member of the year in 2004.

Mrs. Pearson was a member of Queen of Apostles Catholic Church in Alexandria.

Mrs. Pearson was the daughter of the late Franz and Hedwig Baumert. She was also preceded in death by her brothers: OberMachinistMate(OBMT). Werner Baumert who died at sea in WWII in 1945 on the U-boot 774, and Walter Baumert who died in 1966.

Her husband of 43 years, Francis John Pearson, died in 2012. (Find-A-Grave# 102457946).
She was survived by her sister-in-law Dorothy Pearson, her cousin Rudolph Mueller, Bishop of Goerlitz, Germany (ret.) and many friends and relatives.

Friends will be received on Friday, August 29, 2008 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Rd., Springfield, VA 22151. A service to celebrate Ursula's life will begin at 7 p.m. Burial will take place at a later date at the Arlington National Cemetery. The family asks that all visit the guest book to leave their condolences for the family through Ursula's space on www.mem.com . In lieu of flowers, donations are requested in Ursula's name to the American Cancer Society.
