Carlton Abels, 81, died Friday April 21, 2006 at his home surrounded by his family.

A career educator, he was a teacher, coach and school administrator for over 30 years. He entertained many family members with his stories of growing up poor in a sharecropping family during the depression. A standout high school athlete, in Sallis, he served his country in the U.S. Navy during WW II.

Returning from the war in the Pacific, he received football scholarships from Holmes Jr. College, Arkansas State University, and later received advanced degrees from Ole Miss and Mississippi State. He taught vocational agriculture, high school sciences and was a successful coach and administrator.

He touched the lives of many small towns where he lived including: Flora, Carrollton, Belmont, Madison, Marks, Tchula and Ethel.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Doris Burrell Abels, daughters Marylou Lane, Glenda Jones, Carla Shackleford and son Cecil Carlton "Tot" Abels II, 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and sisters Irene Hollingsworth, Lois Lee, Peggy Taylor and Barbara Page.

He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Mary Abels, brothers Cephus, John Ables and Allen "Sonny" Abels, one grandson Paine Jones and a great-granddaughter Natalie Jones.

Visitation to be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday with a funeral at 11 a.m. Monday at the Lee Funeral Home, Winona. Memorials may be made to: Paine Jones Memorial Scholarship c/o the Tri-County Educational Foundation; Natalie Jones Memorial Park, c/o Peoples Bank of Carrollton or the Carrollton United Methodist Church, Carrollton.
