Wells Bamford-The funeral of the late Capt. William Wells Bamford,took place Saturday morning,and was largely attended. His remainds were conveyed to the Methodist Church at St Lawrence,Wolfe Island,where the service was conducated by Rev. Mr. Stewart. Interment was made in the cemetery,connected with the church,both being on the deceased's farm. Being of a generous disposition,he gave the land for the cemetery,also for the church,besides contributing liberally to the fund for building the church.
His liberality was marked in many other ways. He was ever ready to help those who were in need. His home was always open and a welcome was extended to every one.
Capt. Bamford was born in Jefferson Co.,New York 70 years ago (Aug.9,1834) and lived there many years. The son of Albert and Cordelia Gotham Bamford. When a young man of 30 years,he became a Capt. and followed this occuption until a few years ago,when he retired and lived a quiet life,in one of his farm homes, "The Pines" so beautifully situated on the south shore of the Island. He was well known as an old time mariner,sailing the schooner "Raindeer," braving many stormy voyages without an accident,being a careful and skillful captain. Later,he sailed upper Lake steamers.
During his last few weeks of sickness, he was tenderly cared for by his daughter,Mrs. Charles(Isabelle) Halliday, and by his son DeVolson "Voltie" with whom he and his aged wife lived. He leaves to mourn his passing, His widow and five children ,Mrs. Charles Halliday Dexter,N.Y.,Wells and John,of Watertown,N.Y.;Mrs. R.A.(Grace) Gaskin, of this city and J.D,at home. He was a kind,thoughtful father,and husband,and will be greatly missed.

He also was on his boat The Raindeer in the Harbor as the Great fire in the city of Chicago raged.
