San Bernardino Obit (San Bernardino, CA.)
Dec. 19, 1930
PIONEER WOMAN, CITY RESIDENT FOR 71 YEARS, VICTIM OF DEATH
Mrs. Eliza Singleton Ousterhout, resident of San Bernardino for 71 years, died yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs.Alberta Grover of West Colton Avenue, Redlands. She was 91 years old. Despite her advanced age, Mrs.Ousterhout led an active life until early last fall, when she was taken ill. Since September she had been confined to her bed.
Born in Manchester,England, Mrs.Ousterhout crossed the Atlantic Ocean with her parents when she was six years old. The family pioneered through the Middle West, settling for a time in Ohio and then coming out to Salt Lake City, where they lived for several years and where Mrs. Ousterhout was married to the late Jeremiah Drake Ousterhout, who died in 1905.
Mrs.Ousterhout often related to her family and friends how she walked all the distance between Ohio and Utah, having an aversion to riding in the covered wagons.
After her marriage, however, she drove a team and wagon across the plains to San Bernardino during the early Mormon trek into Southern California.
The pioneer woman was a charter member of the Silver Wave Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and of the San Bernardino Pioneer Society.
She is survived by five daughters, Mrs.Rebecca Moore of Central Point, Ore; Mrs.Louise Weiser, of Rialto; Mrs. Belle Williams of Oakland; Mrs.Alberta Grover, of Redlands; Mrs. Theckla Tyler, of San Bernardino;
17 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be under the auspices of Silver Wave chapter. Burial will be in Pioneer Cemetery, and the Pioneer Society will take charge .

UPDATE on Eliza's mother's place of burial:
Elizabeth Singleton's burial place should be corrected. She is not buried in Pioneer Cemetery.
She was buried on the old George Lord ranch on the bench which was just west of Lytle Creek. In 1915, the creek flooded, washing away the little graveyard, including Betty Singleton's body.
Her daughter, Eliza Singleton Ousterhout is buried just off 7th Street beside her 3rd husband, J. D. Ousterhout, known as "Jerry." Please correct the information.
I am Eliza's great great granddaughter. My aunt, Gloria Gillespie White, did extensive research on the Singleton families. When the creek washed away the graveyard on the bench, Robert Singleton, Eliza's dad, was buried under the CLYDE headstone at Mountain View Cemetery on Highland Ave & Waterman Ave. Many of my ancestors are buried there -- the Clydes, Gillespies, Whites, etc.
