Oscar Akers, 95 Last Rites Held September 17

Funeral services for Oscar Akers, 95, of Gravity, held September 17 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were conducted by Carl Cummings and Ross Keyt. Mr. Akers died September 15 at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Corning. Interment was at Washington Cemetery, Gravity.

Oscar Akers was born in Taylor County on January 24, 1878 to Richard Zachary Taylor Akers and Amanda Elizabeth Slyker.

He was married to Cora Mae Brand August 16, 1905 and to this union 11 children were born: Mrs. Carl (Hazel) Sexton of Lenox; Mrs. Leo (Hattie) Clark of Villisca; Mrs. Chester (Gertrude) Weil of Braddyville; Oscar Wayne Akers of Warren, Ore.; Mrs. Edward (Helen) Savage of Bedford; Mrs. Cloyd (Evelyn) Thompson of Las Vegas, Nevada; Mrs. George (Coryal) Bollinger of Union Star, Mo.; Mrs. Eber (Bernita) Ritnour of Omaha, Nebr.; Mrs. Dean (Edna) Posten of Sharpsburg and Cecil William Akers of Red Oak.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, his wife, Cora, one daughter, Ollie, four sisters, five brothers and three grandchildren.

He is survived by: one sister, Rannie McKune; one sister-in-law, Iva Akers; eight daughters; two sons; eight sons-in-law; two daughters-in-law; 44 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

He spent most of his life farming north of Gravity until his retirement in 1950. He lived for 21 years with his daughter, Edna. The last two years of his life were spent at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Corning, Iowa.
