Ada was the daughter of Aaron G. Stout and Helen McKinney. Her father was a very successful businessman and the family moved from Greensburg, Decatur County, Indiana to Olney, Illinois where Aaron's sister Rachel Stout and husband William C. Cummins had moved to around 1861.

Ada married Harry C. St. John, son of John Pierce St. John, who would later become the Populist Governor of Kansas. Harry and Ada had four children, one daughter and three sons. The daughter, Helen died young in 1887 at the age of nine. Ada divorced Harry because of alcoholism but never stopped loving him as she is buried with Harry and daughter Helen in Haven Hill Cemetery in Olney.
