He was a Hagerstown, Maryland police officer that was shot and killed in the line of duty. He was on his normal rounds at the Norfolk & Western Railroad yards at approx. 5:30 PM on 06-25-1901. He heard gunshots and responded to the location. A recently fired employee had returned to the yard and murdered the yard master. As Flory approached with his gun drawn ordering the man to raise his arms, the man shot Flory twice piercing his heart. As Flory was falling, he fired a shot and wounded his assailant who was then apprehended. Flory left a widow and one daughter.
