The parents of Janis were Latvia WW II refugees living in displaced camps while they waited for a country to accept them. Janis was born in a refugee camp in Germany, before the
Abolins Family immigrated to the United States in 1951, when Janis was just two years. The Abolins Family left Bremehaven 21 August 1951, aboard the USNS "General Harry Taylor", arriving at a port in New York 10 September 1951.
Janis was living with his mother and family when he enlisted in the Marines 2 February 1968, at a Des Moines Recruiting Office.
Arriving in Vietnam 7 August 1968, Janis was assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. He died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the body when he detonated a hostile a booby trapped mine.
Survived by his mother, Anna Abolins, his 2 sisters; Maiga, Vija and brother; Juris E Abolins Jr all of 3716 E Walnut St, Des Moines and his father; Juris E Abolins of 1007 E 8th St, Des Moines,IA.
His younger brother, Juris E Abolins served in Vietnam with the Marines.
