He served during the Civil War as a PVT, Co E, 6th U.S. CAV from 10 Sep 1861 - 7 May 1862, when he was discharged for disability. Shortly after his return to OH, he enlisted again, this time with Co D, 88th OH Vol Inf Rgt, and served from 10 Oct 1862 until the regiment was mustered out of service at the end of the war on 03 Jul 1865 at Camp Chase, OH.

He was the husband of Eliza Ann Search, and the father of 11 children:
