VETERAN CALLED
Samuel O. Burkhead, Civil War Veteran, Answers The Call
ON THE FIRING LINE
At All Times, Is The Word Spoken By A Comrade In Service

After suffering for many months from infirmities, the last call came Sunday afternoon at two o'clock for Samuel O. Burkhead, veteran resident of this city, an old soldier of the Civil war, at his home on Line street. He had reached the ripe old age of seventy-five years, practically all of which was lived in this city and vicinity.
He was born August 29, 1842, being a son of Mahaleel and Sarah Jane Burkhead. He was married in young manhood to Miss Malinda Russell. Of the children born to them, four died in infancy and a daughter, Ethel Sampson, passed away ten years ago. The widow and the following children are living: Mrs. Jennie Case, Chicago; Mrs. John Poling, Dunkirk; Mrs. Ed Aughenbaugh, Decatur; Mrs. Wilber Wade, Fort Wayne; Mrs. Morris Parrent, Oakland, Cal.; Jerry B., Toledo, O., and Will, at home.
Mr. Burkhead was a member of the G.A.R. and of the Methodist church, where the funeral service will be held, the date for which, however, has not been set. Burial will be in the Decatur cemetery.

Robert Blackburn writes the following very complete record of his military service:
MILITARY RECORD
Samuel O. Burkhead, at Lincoln's call for three hundred thousand soldiers, July, 1862, left his wife and immediately answered the call by enlisting in Company H, 89th Ind. Volunteers, August 9, 1862, serving his full term of three years. He received his final discharge August 8, 1865.
The regiment was sent into Kentucky and stationed at Munfordsville, where the members received their first experience as soldiers September 14, as the day dawned. The enemy came six thousand strong to try to dislodge our regiment stationed in one of the little forts, there being two small forts each containing one regiment. After three charges and failing to enter the forts the enemy withdrew for the day. Monday and Tuesday, 15 and 16, they used their cannon with but little effect. Meantime they brought up their army of forty thousand and about 70 cannon. The next day we surrendered being parolled and sent home.
After being exchanged, the regiment was assigned to Gen. A. J. Smith's division and stationed at Memphis, Tenn., where it lay for twelve months, when again joined its division and proceeded to Vicksburg, Miss., went on the raid across the state to Meridian, Miss., and returned to Vicksburg, Miss. Then Gen. A. J. Smith was sent on the ill-fated Red River campaign, on its return to Vicksburg it was ordered to Memphis, and thence to Mississippi, to break up General Forest. July 14, he was wound and got his trimming; later made another expedition into Mississippi, then back to Jefferson barracks, Missouri, whence it started on its seven hundred mile tramp after the Rebel General Price, on return to St. Louis, Mo., they were orderedt to Nashville, Tenn., after the two day battle Dec. 15 and 16, 1864, the command followed General Hood as far as Pinlaski, Tenn., thence going to Eastfort, Miss., and from there down the Tennessee, Ohio and Mississippi rivers to its mouth, on through the southwest pass and on to the Gulf of Mexico, landing in the rear of Mobile, Ala. Joining in the siege and capture of the forts. Thence from there to Montgovery, Ala., then back to Mobile, Ala., from there home.
During the entire term Comrade Burkhead was always with his company and on the firing line at all times.
