Saratoga native Mary Kirwan died July 3 of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She was 56.

Born July 21, 1945, Kirwan was a graduate of Oak Street School, Saratoga High School and San José State University. She met her future husband, LaRoue, while working at his Village Book Store in Saratoga. The couple married in 1972 and moved to Alameda, where their daughter, Kristi, was born in 1982. The family returned to Saratoga in 1990.

Kirwan enjoyed taking family vacations in Hawaii and Lake Tahoe. Her other interests included watching sporting events, TV game shows and playing many different card games.

"Mary will always be remembered for her courage, strength, positive attitude and fighting spirit," said her husband and daughter. "Even while her health was declining, she still managed to put others before herself. Her most often-repeated phrase was 'This is my daughter, Kristi.' "

Survivors include husband LaRoue Kirwan of Saratoga; daughter Kristi Kirwan of Saratoga; brother William Geoffroy, aunt Viola Owen, uncle Donald Geoffroy; and numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorial services have been held, with interment at Madronia Cemetery in Saratoga. Donations can be made to Habitat for Humanity or to a charity of choice.
