Velma L. Booth, 91, of Batavia, entered into new life on Sept. 5, 2008, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

She was born on July 16, 1917 in Van Buren County to Harry and Lila Goehring Williams. She married Raymond Booth on April 30, 1939 in Fairfield; he preceded her in death on April 23, 2004.

She was raised and educated near Douds where she was valedictorian of Douds High School Class of 1935. She taught in rural schools from 1936-39. Following their marriage she farmed with her husband in Wapello and Jefferson counties. Her family was named Farm Family of the Year in 1969.She was a member of the Batavia United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, United Methodist Women where she held various offices, Pastime Bridge Club, Circle B Square-dance Club and was a former 4-H leader.

She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn (Don) Nance of Libertyville; her son, Rex (Linda) Booth of Batavia; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Lloyd Williams; her sister, Helen Knecht; a grandson, Thad Booth; and a great-grandson, Steven Aikens.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Batavia United Methodist Church with Pastor Robert Dvorak officiating.
