He married Florence C. Kalscheur on November 12, 1941 at St. Mary's of Pine Bluff Catholic Church. Florence and Ray farmed in Pine Bluff for 20 years. Ray then worked for JC Penney's as a Department Manager for another 20 years. He last worked for UW-Provisions for 16 years prior to his retirement. Ray was a lifelong member of St. Mary's of Pine Bluff Catholic Church. He was also a member of the choir and the Holy Name Society.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Florence; his children: Shirley (Donald) Statz of Sun Prairie, Jan Legler of Madison, Ron (friend, Deborah) Krantz of Madison, Elaine (Tom) Walstad of Cross Plains, Joe (Pat) Krantz of Madison, Winnie Kaschub of Madison; 21 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; a sister, Sr. Mary Krantz of Madison; two brothers: Leonard (Martha) Krantz of Appleton and Harold (Betty) Krantz of Pine Bluff; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He is further survived by four sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Walter (Olga) and Francis; two grandsons: Michael and Matthew Krantz; two sons-in-law: Ron Legler and George "Butch" Kaschub; as well as other in-laws on the Kalscheur side.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at ST. MARY'S OF PINE BLUFF CATHOLIC CHURCH with Fr. Rick Heilman, Msgr. Michael Burke, Msgr. Duane Moellenbrandt, Fr. Tom Coyle, and Fr. Tom Kelley con-celebrating. Burial was held at St. Mary's of Pine Bluff Cemetery. Friends called from 4:00 - 8:00 PM on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at ELLESTAD FUNERAL HOME, 500 N. 8th Street, Mt. Horeb, WI, where a Rosary was prayed at 3:30 PM. Friends also called from 10:00 - 10:50 AM on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at the church.
Ray was a loving husband to Florence and a caring father to his children. His greatest joys were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He spent many happy years of retirement at the family cottage "The Love Nest" in Northern Wisconsin. He took pride in teaching his grandchildren how to fish.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the School Sisters of St. Francis (1501 South Layton Boulevard, Milwaukee WI 53215-1924 or www.sssf.org) or to Holy Hill Carmelite Friars (1525 Carmel Rd, Hubertus, WI 53033-9407).
