Mary Leona Malan, 90, of Freetown died at 10:35 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at Columbus Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was a homemaker and member of Becks Grove Christian Church.

Funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Barkes, Inlow and Weaver Funeral Home on Washington Street with the Rev. Nelson Lee officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Bartholomew County or Becks Grove Christian Church.

Mrs. Malan was born in Linton May 4, 1908, the daughter of Fredrick and Elizabeth Massey Criss. She married Thomas Reed and he preceded her in death. She married Orville J. Malan and he preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Jack Malan of Columbus, Robert W. and Fredrick L. Malan, both of Brown County, and Howard K. Malan of North Vernon; daughters, Barbara Strahl, Ruth Hendricks and Joan Weddle, all of Columbus, Phyllis McQueary and Karen Streeval, both of Brown County, Esther Rutledge of Indianapolis and Fay Bracher of Princeton; a brother, Everett Criss of Spencer; 36 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by sons, John Paul and Orville Malan Jr.; a daughter, Thelma Chelf; and sisters, Berchie Hannum and Evelyn West.
