Mrs. Hazel Dell (Ted) Abplanalp Hardy Crites, 91, of Nacogdoches, Texas, and formerly of Vernal passed away on Aug. 25, 2008, in Nacogdoches.
She was born November 12, 1916, in Vernal.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Nile Grand Hardy and Daniel Vergil Crites; a grandson, Danny J. Hardy; and four brothers, Ferrell, Harold, Theron and John Abplanalp.
Hazel Dell's dad never liked her name, and he began to call her his little teddy bear early on. The name Ted stuck and she was called Ted all through school. Many who knew her well never knew her ‘real' name was Hazel.
Ted's dad was John William Abplanalp, called Jack. He was a sheep man who ran his herd in the high Uintah Mountains north of Vernal. Every spring he would trail the sheep up the mountain with two wagons carrying his growing family and their supplies. The lived on the mountain all summer until the frost drove them back to the valley for the winter.
Ted's mother was Clara, and typical of her times, was wife and mother. They had seven children, six boys and Ted. Ted was next to the oldest, and the younger brothers felt like they had two moms. Clara was very relaxed, happy and easy going, and it was Ted who insisted they mind and ‘be good.' Ted often followed up with the spankings she thought they deserved.
Ted's dad died when she was 13. Her mom went to work for the county. Ted began cooking and waiting tables.
Ted married Nile Grand Hardy and had Jack (John Grant) Hardy and Nila Jean Hardy Riding. They divorced and she later married Daniel Vergil Crites. In 1950 they moved to Houston, Texas, where they lived for the next 15 years. During that time Ted became a store clerk for Joskes. In 1965 Dan retired, and they moved back to Vernal. Ted worked for several different stores in Vernal, among them Lloyd's Shoes and Gibson's.
Ted was always available and happy to help her children and grandchildren. She thoroughly enjoyed her time in both the Provo and the new Vernal temples. In 1998 Ted began to spend winters in Nacogdoches and later moved there full time.
Her viewing will be at the Thompson-Blackburn Funeral home on Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. and again prior to the funeral service at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 6, also at the funeral home.
