Longtime Homer resident Stanley Meacham Engle, 78, died Jan. 1, 2006, at home of cancer.

A wake will be at 10 a.m. Jan. 14 on the MV Rainbow Connection, dock E-1, at the Homer Harbor in Homer. For more information, call 1-907-252-7612 or 1-907-235-6584. His ashes will be scattered in Kachemak Bay.

Mr. Engle was born April 2, 1927, in Long Beach, Calif., to Martha Meacham Gore and F. Stanley Engle. He attended Woodbury Business College in Burbank, Calif. He entered into the U.S. Navy in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1946. In 1948, Mr. Engle worked on a tugboat, removing World War II scrap from the Aleutian chain.

From 1951-53, he worked for Holmes and Narver on the Marshall Islands. He worked for Shell Oil Co. from 1954-69 in California and Anchorage. While in Anchorage, Stan had worked for Carr-Gottstein from 1969-80 and for Anchor Realty from 1980-85. He lived in Anchorage from 1966-85 and in Ninilchik from 1989-2002.

Mr. Engle was self-employed, building and remodeling homes in Anchorage, Ninilchik and Homer.

His wife wrote, "Stan was such a good man that was dearly loved by all his family and friends."

His sister wrote, "Stan was the genuine article. A smart man with a very sharp wit, he was always a delightful conversationalist. He thoroughly enjoyed life and always brightened the lives of his family and friends. He loved to travel, play cards, enjoy good food and the company of his family and friends. He was also a great pool player in his earlier days. He will be remembered with great affection and will be greatly missed."

His daughter-in-law, Patricia, wrote: "To me and all that knew him, Stan was known for his absolute generosity and honesty. He was many things to many people ... No one will ever or could ever fill the place he had in our lives."

Survivors are his wife of 52 years, Doris Engle of Homer; sons, Stephen Engle of Homer and Roderick Engle of Anchorage; grandsons, Woodrow, Gus and Maxwell Engle, all of Anchorage; brothers, Noble Engle of Red Bluff, Calif., and Loren Engle of Redding, Calif.; and sister, Marilyn Engle Cox of Woodinville, Wash.
