James Sr. raised his family in what was called the shean Creak area of Big ugly West Virginia. His father Obediah Jackson Hill settled in the trace fork area of West Virginia. Him and his wife Cornelia Lake married at a young age and was quite involved with the democratic way of life. They made some smart moves at a very young age with help from family and hard work. They raised 15 children and two married into the Isaiah Adkins family in Big ugly area of West Virginia. Obediah had managed to get his hands on quite a substantial amount of land 1800 acres or so in the area through his many dealings. Some say it was because of his wife. Because she being a shrewd person when it came to purchasing land. They were divorced in the early 1930's and parted ways. Some how Cornelia ended up with all but 140 acres that Obediah managed to save but ended up losing that over a debt that he owed his oldest daughter Donnie Mae. Cornelia divided all the land and gave it to her sons. But with holding all the mineral rights and from the property and gave that to the girls. And that kept being passed down through years and some still have the royalties even today. And when James' and his wife Jersie died the land was sold and the royalties from that went to their children.
