Finley Peter Dunne was a popular humorist and political satirist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He created the character Mr. Dooley, an Irish-American bartender who held forth on politics and social issues in a nationally syndicated column, later collected into books including "Mr. Dooley in Peace and War" and "Mr. Dooley in the Hearts of His Countrymen." Theodore Roosevelt was a frequent target of Dunne's wit, and a great fan; Dunne was a frequent guest at the White House.

Mr. Dooley said of newspapers: "Th newspaper does ivrything f'r us. It runs th' polis foorce an' th' banks, commands th' milishy, controls th' ligislachure, baptizes th' young, marries th' foolish, comforts th' afflicted, afflicts th' comfortable, buries th' dead an' roasts thim aftherward". One of Dunne's most memorable quotes is "Trust everybody, but cut the cards."
His wife, Margaret Ives Abbott, was the first American woman ever to win an Olympic gold medal, for golf in 1900. They had four children: Finley Peter Dunne, Jr., screenwriter/director Philip Dunne, and twins Peggy and Leonard.
Finley Peter Dunne died of throat cancer and is entombed in the mausoleum of his friend Francis P. Garvan in Woodlawn Cemetery.
