Donald Richard Pittman was born Aug. 27, 1910, at Omaha, NE, son of Corda L. and Anna R. (Kanka) Pittman. The family moved to Plattsmouth while Donald was a young boy. At age 10, he was lucky to survive an encounter with downed power lines after a storm. He was graduated from Plattsmouth high school in 1928 and afterward attended the University of Nebraska. In his youth, he was an accomplished mile runner and golfer, earning many golf tournament titles.

During WWII, he served in the United States Army Air Force from 1942 – 1945, leaving the service with the rank of Technical Sergeant. He wrote an extensive journal of his experiences (3 years, 6 months, 16 days), including service in the Mediterranean theatre of operations as a meteorologist. After the war, he moved to Casper, Wyo., where he worked as a weather forecaster with the Federal Aeronautics Administration (FAA), retiring in 1975. Donald never married.

Donald died March 9, 1982 in Casper, Wyo. Funeral services were held Monday, March 15, at The Church of the Holy Spirit, Plattsmouth, NE. The Rev. Fr. Stanley Schieffer officiated. Pallbearers were John Cloidt, John Brink, Clarence Cuthrell, Albert Ulrich, Fred Toman and Dale Bowman. Interment was in Oak Hill cemetery, Plattsmouth. A color guard unit was provided at graveside by members of American Legion Post 56, Plattsmouth.
