OKANOGAN COUNTY PIONEER DIES; HERE SINCE 1903

After several weeks of favorable improvement following an operation, McD. Hershberger, 76, pioneer of the Ellemehem district, suffered a relapse and passed away Monday morning at the Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane. Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Steele were immediately notified and accompanied by their son, William, left for Spokane. Funeral services will probably be held in Spokane.

McDonough Hershberger was born in 1851 on a farm near Spencer, Roane county, West Virginia. He was the son of John McDonough Hershberger and Elizabeth Kelly Hershberger.

His boyhood was also spent in West Virginia, where he also obained his schooling. He left in the early '80's for Minnesota, and from there went to deadwood, in the Black Hills, during the gold excitement, and worked in various capacities in the mines.

From Deadwood Mr. Hershberger went to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and later came to southern Oregon by way of Colorado.

He lived in Pasco in the late '90's and from there went to Wimer, B. C., then to Marcus, from which place he came to Oroville in 1902, homesteading on his present ranch on Ellemehem mountain, where he has engaged in general farming and stock raising.

During the past few years Mr. Hershberger has become interested in purebred stock, and was one of the organizers of the Purebred Stockgrowers' Association.

Mr. Hershberger was married to Miss Teresa Stack of Amsterdam, New York, here in 1913. Mrs. Hershberger survives him, and was at his bedside at the time of his death.

Mr. Hershberger is also survived by a brother, William, who lives in West Virginia; a second brother, J. P. Hershberger of Oroville, two half brothers, T. J. Ferrell and S. R. Ferrell of West Virginia; Otis, Clint and Rush Hershberger, nephews, of Oroville; and Mrs. C. B. Noyes, Miss Etta Mollie and Gladys Hershberger, nieces of Oroville.
