Hayne graduated from South Carolina College in the class of 1858. He studied law in the office of Hayne & Miles, of which firm his father, the Hon. Isaac W. Hayne, Attorney general of South Carolina, was the senior member, and was admitted to the Bar in 1861. On the breaking out of the war Mr. Hayne served in the Marion Artillery, and subsequently on the staff of General Johnson Hagood and of General James Chestnut. When the war ended he was associated with his father in the practice of law, and so continued until his father's withdrawal from the Bar. In 1876 he entered into copartnership with Mr. John F. Ficken, which continued to his death.
