Nichols was a prominent Clermont County defense attorney from a family of attorneys. His father, Allen Nichols founded the firm Spiedel & Nichols, later Nichols, Speidel & Nichols. Hugh Nichols was a community leader, serving on numerous boards and committees. He was a graduate of Miami University and served for more than 20 years on its Board of Trustees, and as its chair from 1956-59. He earned his law degree from the University of Cincinnati. He was initiated into Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity at Miami and was later a member of its National Council. He was a Rotarian and Mason and served as an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Batavia, which he joined in 1914. He was a delegate to the 1952 Democratic National Convention.

He married Winbourne "Winnie" Smith on September 7, 1930 and they had two children, Thomas Smith Nichols and James Gilmore Nichols, both attorneys. His brother Harold D. Nichols was an Ohio State Senator and a judge in the common pleas court of Clermont County and they had one sister, Jeanette Nichols Martin.
