She was born on October 9, 1905 in Abingdon IL to Harry L. and Della M. (Perdue) Thurman. She married Artie Willis Haynes in Des Monies IA on June 18, 1924. He preceded her in death on July 21,1970.

She is survived by one daughter, Doris Thurman Chiado of Berwyn, IL, one sister, Irma Thurman Thomas of Galesburg IL, three grandchildren Connie Speerly of Morton, IL James S. Chiado, Jr. of Las Vegas, NV and Robert J. Chiado of Carrolton, TX, and two great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by one daughter Betty Thurman Peck on March 7, 1995, three brothers and one sister.

She first worked as a seamstress for Blue Bell in Abingdon IL for 26 years. She later worked as an office clerk for the Knox County Courthouse. She last worked as an agent for the Combined Insurance Company Galesburg IL for 33 years, retiring in 1987. She was the first woman ever to earn the Grand Diamond Award. At the age of seventy she went back to school for insurance classes to expand her services. She was a member of the Maquon (IL) Methodist Church and was an associated member of the Central Congregational Church in Galesburg. She was a former member of the Royal Neighbors and the Good Cheer Club. She was a member of the Welcome Wagon and the Newcomer Greeting Clubs, both in Galesburg. She attended schools in Cameron and St. Augustine. She was a graduate of Abingdon High School and Brown's Business College in Galesburg.

Services held 11 AM Friday September 28, 2001 at the Central Congregational Church, Galesburg, with Rev. John D. Carson Jr. and Rev. Jeremy Hensley officiating. Burial in Abingdon (IL) Cemetery.
