San Bernardino Second District Supervisor 1857-1858 and 1864-1865
Joseph was a blacksmith by trade. He was married at Niles, New York to Lorna Camp. About 1843 he moved with his wife and 4 children to Hancock County, Illinois, for about 4 years. From there they moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa. Staying there 1 year, joining the Mormon Church.
Then on to Salt Lake City, leaving the church he returned to Iowa for 5 years more. In 1853 they decided to move to California, returning to Salt Lake to wait on a wagon train going to California. Finally the train left Salt Lake City and was said to be the longest train ever orginating from Salt Lake City. They arrived in San Bernardino June 5,1854.
In February 1855 he bought 55 acres of land at(3rd street and Mt.Vernon) what is now the Santa Fe depot and yards are located.
After public service he retired to running his farm where he died at age 75. His wife Lorna survived him as did 4 of there 5 children;
