Elizabeth Rix Whitaker or "Bettie" was born in North Carolina and traveled to Alabama with her parents Dudley A. Whitaker and Sarah Hargot Whitaker. According to information passed down by family members and genealogy books her father oversaw a plantation after arriving in Alabama. Elizabeth later traveled with her brother to Wayne County MS and met and married William "Bill" Covington.
She had four children by Bill Covington one of which was my great grandmother Sarah "Sallie" Covington. After Bill Covington died Elizabeth married Archibald "Archey" Weaver and had four children by Mr. Weaver.
According to family legend great great grandmother Bettie was a very small woman and wore large hats to "make herself look more formidable to the children". She also had a temper, one of her great grandsons remembers her throwing a hammer at him.
Unfortunately my mother and her siblings never recalled meeting their great grandmother even though she lived until they were young adults. The reason for this is unknown . It is said she was bedridden the last four years of her life due to a broken hip.
==========
Some of this information is inaccurate, but I am leaving it as is with the following observations.
The spellings I have found for her mother are usually Sarah HARGETT Carter. Alternately, I have also seen HEWETT or HEWITT as that name in at least two places.
It was not a great grandson who had a hammer thrown at him; it was a grandson who lived in the same household, the only son of Elizabeth Rix Whitaker Covington Weaver's last daughter, Vinidray. And it wasn't a hammer; it was an ax.
Finally, her middle name, "Rix", has been passed down to great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. It is possible that the name was originally Ricks, as that can be found in North Carolina families of that time. A familial connection has yet to be established.
