mother-in-law, Saundra Bauer of Choctaw; paternal grandparents, Genendal Brown of Spencer and James & Ann Lowe; and numerous aunts & uncles. Her young son, Anthony Christopher, II, was also killed in the Federal Building.
Dana L, 24, and Anthony Christopher Cooper II, 2, of Moore; wife and child of AC
Cooper of Moore; daughter and grandson of Carl and Linda Brown of Choctaw, and
Anthony M and Beth Cooper of Midwest City; grandson of Saundra Bauer of Choctaw;
director, America’s Kids; son Christopher began day care in early April after a
bout with chicken pox.
Dana Cooper was an early childhood education major at USO, a mother, and a day
care director, yet many an evening she worked on extras for her charges – a new
bulletin board, an art project. “Children were her life,” said Linda Brown,
Dana’s mother. “She just loved the little ones.”
Her son, Christopher, attended America’s Kids, but in fact, Dana treated all the
children as her own, bringing home kids stranded because of family emergencies
and once babysitting an older child when the mother went into labor.
Blessed with patience, said her mother, Dana understood grownups can ask too
much of children. “She always preached that you can’t expect a kid to stay
still forever,” said husband AC. Child safety issues (she was bothered by
parents who didn’t buckle up their children in car seats) and making learning
fun were paramount to Dana. “Sometimes (they’d be playing) and she’d
say, “They’re learning, and they don’t even know it,” AC recalled.
She was studying to become a kindergarten or first grade teacher in addition to
her day care tasks, yet Dana and AC set aside one Saturday a month as a family
day to visit the park or play in Christopher’s inflatable pool.
Christopher liked “Sesame Street’s” Ernie and Elmo, chatting on the telephone
with his grandma, playing in his cardboard house, and eating cheese. He could
eat an orange in one sitting, and his favorite song was “Jesus Loves the Little
Children.” Mother and son belonged to First Baptist Church of Nicoma Park,
where Dana served on the nursery committee. Published in The Oklahoma Today,
Winter 1996 issue.
