Gone to His Reward Elder John Hawley of Ravenwood, Mo. died at the home of his son E. P. Hawley, who is proprietor of the Barr Hotel in Lamoni, Iowa, Saturday night, about 9:00 o'clock, April 17, 1909. He and wife had gone to the above place some weeks previous to visit their son and to attend the L.D.S. general conference. He was taken sick during the conference with pnemonia fever which terminated in his death. During his sickness, which lasted one week, he seemed unconscious of his sufferings and a few hours previous to his deathfolded his arms and thus passed peacefully away. He was born March 4th, 1826, in Hancock county, Illinois, being at the time of his death 83 years, 1 month, and 13 days old. From the history of his life, written by himself, we read, at the age of 11 years he covented with God and the church to keep the commandments of heaven, and live to the best of his ability and understanding of the doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was united in marriage in Texas October 22nd, 1849, to Miss Sylvia Johnson. To this union 12 children were born, 4 dying in infancy. Those living are namely: Ben Hawley, Alma Hawley, Mrs. J.D. Gates, and Mrs. J.W. Powell, and Frank Hawley, all of Ravenwood. Mrs. Wm. Pett of Dow City, Iowa, Ebur Hawley, Lamoni, Iowa, Isaac Hawley, Washington are left to mourn and miss the counsel of a kind father; also, his aged and (?) wife is bereft of a companion of almost 60 years. He was a prominent man in the church in his earlier days; a self-sustaining elder for more than 50 years. His mission being in Iowa, Kansas, Texas, Indian Territory and Missouri, and an active branch worker during his more feeble years. He has been an old veteran in the Army of the Lord; has borne many persecutions with the church in an early day; has fought the good fight, kept the faith and a crown of righteousness awaits the faithful. Father Hawley was a man whose honesty and integrity were unquestioned by all who knew him; of strong convictions, and of unswerv
