Guy⁴ Truman Childs PATERNAL lineage: ( Joseph³, Isaac², unknown Childs¹ )

Guy⁵ Truman Childs MATERNAL lineage: (Blanche⁴Clementina Peckinpaugh, Caroline³ Roe/Rowe, Elizabeth² Plymale, Elizabeth¹ Bethia Bowen )

GUY TRUMAN CHILDS 75, was born on his parent's farm near Logan, Harrison County, IA Nov. 18, 1887. Reared in Fedora, Miner County, SD, the 5th of seven children (Ira Bell, Isaac Elijah "Lidge", Luella Mildred, Joseph R. , Guy Truman, Clifford Ernest, Florence V. ) born to Joseph L. Childs and Blanche Clementina "Tina" Peckinpaugh. He looked distinctive and handsome as an adult with plenty of gray hair, blue eyes and was about 5'11" and weighed 175 lbs. He had a gentle voice and manner, not insisting on his own way and generous to neighbors or those in need.

Guy's father, Joseph, ran the Post Office in South Dakota and his mother, was the Post Mistress. His sister, Florence, delivered the rural mail via pony express.

Guy was living in Hermosa, Custer County, SD at the time he married (May 24, 1910) May Barbara STEIBER in Mitchell, Divison County, South Dakota. May was the daughter of Caroline Reierson HOUGH and Reinhard Philip STEIBER of Miner County, SD, their parents lived on neighboring homesteads in Miner County, SD.

After his marriage, Guy farmed near Fedora, SD on the Joseph L. Childs homestead where his first three children were born: Esther May, Delbert and Evelyn Louise Childs.

Then the family moved to a (rented) farm south of Woodworth, ND where the family lived near Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge (for pelicans).

After a year the family moved to east central Minnesota where Guy began working as a Miner on the Cuyuna (iron ore) Range in Crow Wing County, MN. The family lived in several Minnesota mining communities including: Trommald, Deerwood, Crosby, and Ironton, MN. This proved to be dangerous work and Guy's father-in-law, Reinhard Philip Steiber, urged him to change jobs.

In 1922 he moved his family of five children to Grand Rapids, MN where Guy worked for the Blandin Paper Company. His job was to add the right amount of dye to the huge vats of pulp before it was made into paper. He was an expert at this job. As his granddaughter, Evelyn Rowe, I went to his work and saw him doing this job several times. He was a member of the Quarter-Century Club of the Blandin Paper Company. Perhaps as a result of the noise of the paper machines, Guy was hard of hearing.

He was mild-mannered, cooperative, generous and kind. He valued education and would sit and read the large dictionary that sat on a pedestal in his living room. During the Great Depression he brought garden vegetables to neighbors. Both of his sons, Delbert and Wilbur served in WWII at the same time which must have been stressful on the family. Wilbur was in the Army in Germany and Delbert in the Pacific. Both sons survived, but Wilbur suffered from PTSD after the war.

When Guy retired, his hobbies included fishing, rock and gem collecting/ polishing and gardening. He died in Grand Rapids, MN of a bowel obstruction on May 15,1963 in Grand Rapids, MN.

Survivors include his wife, May Barbara; three daughters: Esther Childs (Rev. Ralph) Rowe of Fargo, ND, Evelyn Childs (John) Long, Chicago, IL; Florence Childs (David) Browne of Cleveland, OH; two sons who were WWII veterans: Wilbur (never married) and Delbert (Kathryn) Childs of Grand Rapids, MN. Two sisters: Mrs. Florence (Guy) Gordon, Tacoma, WA, Mrs. Luella (A.K.) Lambert, San Jose, CA; Two brothers, Esley C. Childs, Upton, WY and Issac "Lidge" Childs, Coolidge, AZ.
