John R. "Jack" Jenkins, 69, of Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of Lafayette, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008.
He was born Nov, 28, 1938, in Chicago, to Ralph O. Jenkins and Margaret F. Rayburn Jenkins. He resided in Chicago for several years and spent summers at the family farm, near Clarks Hill. At the age of eleven, he came to live with his grandparents, Mack and Ethel Jenkins.

Mr. Jenkins attended Clarks Hill School, and graduated from Lauramie High School in 1956. He graduated from Indianapolis International Barber School and became a licensed barber in 1960. He served his internship under R.A. Tim Parvis and became a Master Barber. He was also a member of the National Guard and the Army Reserve during the late 1950's and early 1960's.

On March 11, 1962, he married Frances Gean Watkins, and they later divorced. On Dec. 31, 1991, he married Cindy Land, and she survives.

He barbered in the Purdue Village and later at the Indiana Veteran's Home for 28 years. Just Hair Cuts at 4th and Owen St. in Lafayette, was the last business he owned and operated, although he continued barbering during retirement in Florida.

He had many hobbies and enjoyed developing small businesses. A former licensed pilot, he enjoyed flying. In 1975, he earned his cosmetology license. He graduated from the Missouri Auction School in 1978, and partnered with Barclay Peters. He was a licensed realtor for Gustaval Realty.

Mr. Jenkins was a former member of Clarks Hill Christian Church and became a member of St. Mary Church of Frankfort in 1982. He was a member of the American Legion, and served as commander of Lafayette Post 11 from 2004 to 2005.
Surviving are three daughters, Geanie Jenkins-Dunbar of Lafayette, Jacqueline D. Wainscott of Leesburg, Fla. and Ashley Webberson of Carroll, Iowa; and two sons, William Jenkins of Lafayette and Adam Jenkins of Port Charlotte, Fla.

The American Legion, Lafayette Post 11 will host a salute for the former commander on Saturday, August 30, 2008 at 10 a.m., 1801 S. 9th St. Graveside services will be held at Old Union Cemetery near Clarks Hill in the Bryant-Jenkins plot, Saturday, August 30, 2008 at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Legion Lafayette Post 11, specifically to the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's Home in Knightstown. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
