Poet, Author. A graduate of Princeton University and Princeton Theological Seminary, he was a professor, Presbyterian clergyman, poet, author and diplomat. He taught English at Princeton University and lectured at the University of Paris. He chaired the committee that wrote the first book of Presbyterian liturgy, "The Book of Common Worship of 1906." President Woodrow Wilson appointed him Ambassador to The Netherlands and Luxembourg, a post he held from 1913 to 1917. An author of short stories and poetry with spiritual themes, several of his poems became the lyrics to hymns, including "Joyful, joyful we adore thee" set to the tune of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy." His most well known poem and much quoted is "Gone From My Sight."
