J. W. CHURCHILL is the son of Chauncey and Catharine CHURCHILL, of Courtland county, New York, where he was born August 13th, 1836. He has been a farmer from his youth. Although his educational advantages were somewhat limited, he contrived by industry to obtain a very good education, and is well fitted for almost any business in which he might engage. He settled in Champaign county, in 1859. He followed the occupation of farming until the late war; he enlisted in July, 1862, in the Seventy-sixth Regiment Illinois Volunteers, and served three years. He was discharged at the end of his term of service and resumed his occupation of farming, purchasing eighty acres of land where he resides.
On the 19th day of April, 1871, Mr. Churchill was married to Miss Alice, daughter of David MARTENIE, a pioneer of Raymond township. Mr. Churchill and wife have had born to them two children, Mary and Charles. When Mr. Churchill came to this county, his entire possessions were the clothing upon his back, but by ceaseless industry he has become the possessor of between two and three hundred acres of very fine farming land, which is being rapidly improved. This gentleman was the first clerk in Raymond township.
Note: there was another son, Clarence, born to John and Alice after the above article was written.
