Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2007, at First Baptist Church of Lafayette for Belva Williams Abney, 88, who passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at her residence.

The Rev. Perry Sanders, Pastor Emeritus of First Baptist Church of Lafayette, and the Rev.Steve Horn, pastor of First Baptist Church of Lafayette, will conduct the funeral services.

Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. Luther Burney at 2 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2007, at Centuries Memorial Park in Shreveport.

Ms. Abney, a native of Castor, La. and resident of Lafayette, was the daughter of the late Wilburn Williams of Castor, La. and the former Mallie Pollock of Saline, La. She retired from Sears after 27 years of service. She also retired from Wal-Mart as a door greeter after 15 years of service. Belva traveled extensively all of her life. She was a wonderful, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her true love was her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and her church, First Baptist Church of Lafayette, where she was a choir member for 50 years.

She is survived by one daughter, Julia "Judy" Abney Laughlin Gatlin and husband, George, of Lafayette; one son, L.T. Abney Jr. and wife, Lucy, of The Woodlands, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lewis Teague Abney Sr.; five sisters; four brothers; and one son-in-law, Aubrey Arlan Laughlin.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed Wednesday from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. and will continue Thursday from 8 a.m. until time of service at Delhomme Funeral Home.
