Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 1898 Mar 4 - Article No. 57 by Dr. Jackson Truesdale
Excerpt:
"____The youngest son of David (Hayes) was James D. This son I remember well as a frequent customer when engaged in business. He married Eliza Rummage. James D. and Eliza were wonderfully blessed by being the parents of 14 children, and there is no knowing how many more might have come to gladden their hearts had not the poor woman died before she was 37 years old. Such a family needed a mother's care and a widow (Mary) Quackenbush (m. James D. Hayes on 12 Nov 1851) was willing to assume that responsibility. How many (if any) children the widow had by her first husband to bring with her we are not informed, but we are told seven more were added to the happy family, so we see James was the proud father of 21 children. We are told by some old philosopher that the man who makes two blades of grass grow where only one grew before is a benefactor to the world. How much more of a benefactor would he be if he made 21 blades grow where none grew before? The great enemy of our race has been busy with this family fourteen of them are no more. James D. before leaving Canfield had possession of the old farm and lived in the old brick house built in 1827. Some time during the seventies he with his family removed to swell the population of Wells county, Ind."
