Julia Ogden Hicks was born in New York City in 1830, one of 4 known daughters of prominent and wealthy John Gustavius Hicks and Lavinia Graham. She grew up in a brownstone in NY, now the location of the Washington Square Hotel. Both the Hicks and Graham families have long roots in the Northeast, and she is descended from Robert Hicks, who settled at Plymouth, MA in 1621.

Julia's father died in 1843 when she was 13 years old, and her mother married a Mr. Meade, whereupon the family moved to Raleigh, Wake Co, NC. It was here in 1851 that the 21-year old Julia married 32-year old Dr. Richard Benneham Haywood, son of Sherwood Haywood and Eleanor Howard Hawkins, of Raleigh.

Dr. and Mrs. Haywood lived on Blount Street in Raleigh, where they raised 10 children, with only 8 surviving to adulthood: Sherwood (1853-1923), Graham (1854-1910), Silliman (1856-1856), Effie Hicks (1857), Lavinia Graham (1859), Howard Weywood (1861-1919), Eleanor Howard (1863-1904), Marion Tilou (1866), Marshall DeLancey (1871-1933), and Henrietta Young (1875-1879.)

Julia was widowed in 1889, when Dr. Haywood died at age 70. The then 59-year old widow survived another 29 years until her passing in 1918 at age 88. The Haywoods are buried in Oakwood Cemetery with other family members.
