Martha Jane Sherman was born in Moriah, Essex, New York, March 29, 1837. Her family moved to Clover Twp. near Galesburg, Illinois in 1850. There she became a member of the Baptist church at the age of 14. She married Jedediah H. Barnett on March 7, 1854. The early years of their married life was spent near Galesburg, where 10 of their 11 children were born. In the early spring of 1877 they moved to a farm near Hiawatha, Kansas where Martha lived until her death. She died March 17, 1899. She was 61 years, 11 months and 17 days old.
