During the Civil War, Jacob served in Steuben's Regiment - an entirely German Infantry Unit. He was listed on the roster as Max J Gut. The regiment was organized in NYC and was mustered in for a two year enlistment on Apr 1861. The regiment mustered out of service on May 1863 from NYC after expir of term. Member of GAR.
