After they were married the Hughes homesteaded in Montana, then moved to the Palouse area where they farmed. Hughes was also a house mover, and brought several houses from Elk River to the Moscow area during the 1930's.
Hughes attended the Clear Creek country school in the Palouse area and later went to Cheney Normal. He was affiliated with the Moscow Eagles and the Palouse Christian Church.
Survivors he leaves two sons, William of Viola; Charles of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Mrs Lyle Howell of Viola; Mrs. Perry Farnam of Moscow; 18 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by another son, Wendell.
