James married Sarah Brady, daughter of Thomas Allyn and Lucinda (Phillips) Brady (Thomas and Lucinda later divorced and she remarried to Leroy Tarbell, he to Martha C. Johnson) on February 17, 1878 in Golden, Colorado.
According to an article from the Colorado Transcript, during the week of July 24th, 1880, a male child was born to James and Sarah. The 1885 census shows a son with the initial "S" in the house. By the 1900 census he may have been out on his own. Cemetery records also show that on August 31st, 1900, "twins of J.S. Baird" were buried in the family plot.
Note: the burial of the twins also occurred on the same day that Edna's burial took place, she is buried in the grave next to them.
Cemetery records give two possible burial dates for James: March 13, 1904 or January 31, 1938. The 1938 date is the correct date as James is listed on the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census.
