Obituary

Martha Rallston was born Oct. 2nd, 1830, in Washington county, Penn. Her parents immigrated to this country at an early age from Ireland. She was one of a family of fourteen children and was the last surviving member. She was married to Robert McDowell Jan. 24th, 1849. To this union were born fourteen children, nine girls and five boys, nine of whom are still living and have families of their own. All were present at her funeral except one daughter, Rachel Missildine, who lives in Oregon, she not being able to be present. The family came to Iowa in 1863 settling in Madison county, near Winterset. This was their home during the greater part of the time. Her husband died April 25th, 1899.

Mother McDowell died at the home of her youngest daughter, Mrs. A. B. Miller, in Carlisle, Iowa, March 13th, being at the time of her death 77 years, 5 months and 11 days old. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. D. Graham, pastor of the Scotch Ridge U. P. church, and she was interred by the side of her husband in Woodland cemetery, Des Moines.
